Freshman Admission:
B.S. Nursing Basic Program

Acceptance & Retention Criteria

Applicants to UB selecting nursing as their choice of major will be reviewed for admission and, if qualified, will be admitted both to the University and the School of Nursing.  Admission is on a space available basis.

By the sophomore year, students must have earned a minimum GPA of 2.7 overall and completed at least five of the prerequisite nursing courses, including anatomy and physiology.  A minimum grade of C is required in all prerequisites.

To remain in the major, students must maintain a 2.7 overall by the start of the junior year, complete all 13 prerequisites in four semesters, and maintain good academic standing in the School of Nursing and the University.  Good academic standing is required to remain in the upper division of the program.

All intended nursing students may apply to School of Nursing in February. The basic nursing application is available on line at our web site.

Admission is competitive and granted on a space available basis. 

Successful candidates will present a strong overall academic record.  To be eligible to apply, students must have completed most of the prerequisites including anatomy and physiology and be able to complete all 13 prerequisites by the following fall.  All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.

Applicants with a previous non-nursing bachelor's degree from a U.S. institution or international equivalent and a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 will be waived certain prerequisites requiring them to complete a total of 9.  See the curriculum page: http://nursing.buffalo.edu/academics/basic.asp#curric for a full list of prerequisites and potential waived courses.

The application is a two step process.  All applicants must apply to both UB and the School of Nursing; these are the deadlines:

Continuing UB Student Admission:

RN/BS Admissions

The University at Buffalo School of Nursing offers RNs with associate degrees or diplomas in nursing, a unique program to earn their BS degree that both supplements and builds upon the core nursing knowledge and skills which all RNs achieve.  This program is especially designed for students who are already registered professional nurses who have successfully passed the national licensing exam, the NCLEX.
Admission is for Fall semester only.

 

 Admission criteria for the RN/BS program includes the following:

  • An associate’s degree or diploma in nursing
  • Admission to UB and the School of Nursing 
  • A minimum overall undergraduate GPA of 2.7 for all previous college work
  • A current US RN license
  • Completion of all prerequisites prior to enrollment.

UB Application:

  • Mail your application directly to UB Admissions Office. 15 Capen Hall, University at Buffalo, Buffalo, NY 14260.  (Mailing it to the processing unit in Albany will take longer).
  • Applying to UB as early as possible because the School of Nursing cannot review your application until your UB application is complete and all transcripts are received. 
  • Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.  Recommended deadlines are November 15 for Spring and June 15 fall.  

School of Nursing application:

  • Admission is possible for the fall or spring semesters 
  • Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.  Recommended deadlines are December 1 for Spring and July 1 for fall.    
  • The School of Nursing application must be complete to be considered  
Advisement:
Early advisement is strongly recommended.  Prospective students are encouraged to seek advisement from the Academic Advisor, Alisha Taggart-Powell at (716) 829-2537, prior to application in order to discuss each person's unique record and circumstances. 

 



ABS Admissions

The Accelerated Bachelor of Science (BS) Option for Second-Degree Students is the UB School of Nursing’s (SON) accelerated second-degree option for a Bachelor of Science in nursing.  In only 12 months (May to May) of full time study, these graduates are fully prepared to take the state board NCLEX exam for licensing to become a registered nurse (RN).

This option offers the undergraduate nursing curriculum as an intensive, full-time, 12-month program designed for the mature, highly motivated, career-minded student who has already completed an undergraduate and/or graduate degree in a field other than nursing.  Listed below is the program outline. 

 


Admission & How to Apply

 

Minimum requirements must be met for admission into the Accelerated BS option, however it is expected successful applicants will exceed these basic requirements.

  • A minimum of a 3.0 overall GPA for all undergraduate work and a 3.0 in the prerequisite courses.  The list of courses may be reviewed at: http://nursing.buffalo.edu/academics/abs.asp
  • Prerequisite courses must either be completed upon application or a plan for completing them by the time the program starts in May, should be submitted with your application. Admission will be granted on a space available basis.

UB Application:

    October 15
  • On the UB application use the number #1143 for the curriculum code and #20 for the campus code

 

School of Nursing application:

  • Applications for the ABS program are available starting July 15.
  • The deadline to apply is November 1.   
  • The School of Nursing application must be complete to be considered including the requirement for a resume, goal statement, and plan to complete any remaining prerequisites.
  • Qualified applicants will be invited for an interview. 

 

Student Advising



Academic advisement for students applying to the basic nursing program, as well as those admitted to the major, is provided by the Office of Student Affairs and faculty in the School of Nursing, 1040 Kimball. 

Call 716-829-2537 for an appointment - in office or by phone.  For UB students, Fall 2008 Drop In Hours that do not require an appointment are - Tuesday 10:00 AM to Noon and Wednesday 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM .
