Are you a college graduate in search of a stable career, with numerous employment opportunities? Are you looking for a flexible profession with limitless career paths? Are you excited about a career working with people to promote optimal health? Are you intrigued by the possibility of acquiring credentials that will demand a rising salary? Are you interested in a challenging, multifaceted career that will allow you to learn new skills, and practice in a variety of exciting health care settings? Do you want results in one-year?

If so, we suggest the field of nursing… a field without boundaries, and a field in the midst of great expansion and growth creating countless opportunities. Nursing is one of the most rapidly expanding career areas in today's economy, and there has never been a better time to begin your career in this uniquely challenging and rewarding field.

The faculty of the UB School of Nursing (SON) would like to introduce you to the newly designed, accelerated second-degree option for a Bachelor of Science in nursing. This option will offer the undergraduate nursing curriculum as an intensive, full-time, 12-month program designed for the mature, highly motivated, career-minded student who has already completed an undergraduate and/or graduate degree in a field other than nursing.

Students selecting this option will complete all required courses in the nursing major in a sequence that provides accelerated progression, and upon completion, are prepared to take the NCLEX exam for licensing as a registered nurse (RN). During their study, Accelerated BS students will also be given the opportunity to accrue up to 12 graduate credit hours, which may later be applied to a master's degree program in a nursing specialty area of interest, therefore, giving students a head start toward masters and doctoral degrees.

Curriculum

Students entering with transfer credit from other institutions may be able to use those courses to satisfy requirements if they are determined to be equivalent.  A chart of some equivalencies from certain schools from which students commonly transfer to UB can be found on Taurus. Courses may also be submitted to Transfer and Articulation Services, Fargo 104, University at Buffalo, Buffalo, NY 14261- 0050, 716-645-2288  or email: taurus@buffalo.edu.

Nursing Coursework

The curriculum of the ABS program is based on appropriate modifications to the of the BS program. The prerequisites of the program are adjusted to reflect the students' maturity as a scholar and ability to transfer learning to another discipline and are therefore somewhat more flexible. All prerequisites must be completed before begining the program. The academic requirements of the BS degree includes a 54 total credit curriculum completed within a strict, 12-month timeframe.

Since Accelerated BS students have already met the requirements for and have received undergraduate and possibly graduate degrees, they will take some graduate level nursing coursework. These courses will assist students in gaining a level of knowledge within a particular substantive area, while adding graduate credit to their transcript for future application toward a graduate degree.
